Being transparent is something I value highly and let’s face it; It’s no secret that the SEO industry can have a nasty reputation, often filled with a lot of smoke of mirrors. SEO can be confusing. You can often have a lot of questions which is entirely understandable.
To to help with some of your burning questions I’ve gone ahead and answered three of the most common questions I get asked by new clients.
The price of SEO can vary wildly from company to company.
Like most SEO agencies, I currently provide SEO services to clients on a monthly subscription model. Some Australian SEO agencies will cost as little as $200 a month, while some overseas agencies will charge even less. Most reputable agencies will charge $700 per month at a minimum for an industry which is relatively low in competition. Anything below $700 per month and I would seriously question how they plan to get results, pay staff and business costs with such a small monthly SEO budget.
As a business owner myself, I understand cost is an essential factor for any business. A lot of companies do look at SEO as an expense to their business where really, it’s an investment. When you look at it from the perspective of making $5 (or potentially more) for every $1 you spent, would you consider that an expense or investment? It’s often not until businesses start seeing results that they realise just how powerful SEO can be for their business and how it truly is an investment towards their business growth. A rule of thumb is 12 months at a minimum.
SEO processes take at least 2-3 months to show some significant effect. During this time, your website is analysed and optimised. It can then take a couple of weeks for Google to crawl through your site and work out where the site should position itself in the rankings amongst your competitors. Achieving stable high rankings can take up to 6-12 months. In the case that you’re in a highly competitive area and most other businesses on the first page are also doing SEO, then it could be an ongoing process to remain competitive with those other websites. The good news that it doesn’t take a full 12 months to see results. You can expect results quite early within the first few months, so effectively you should see enquiries increase throughout that time, and the cost of SEO should cover itself.
In any campaign, my approach is to target the lower competition keywords first. Lower competition keywords would be localised terms such as ‘Pest Control Paddington’. Targeting localised keywords, you will usually see results with these less competitive keywords much faster over broader terms like ‘Pest Control Brisbane’. The localised method is an important step to get your phone ringing and enquiries coming to your inbox as soon as possible. Once the site ranks well for localised terms, then I’ll chase after the more competitive terms. The localised method isn’t the way with every business, mainly with highly competitive cases. In this scenario, if I was to try and get the site ranked for ‘Pest Control Brisbane’ straight off the bat, it could take six months to get it anywhere near a position where you start to see enquiries coming through. It’s what I refer to clients as going after the low hanging fruit first, and delivers results very quickly.
A new website isn’t always necessary.
If you’re starting with a website built on Wordpress a lot of the time, it’s a case of restructuring, cleaning up errors, and optimising content to get it on track. Of course, there are circumstances where this isn’t the case. Wordpress sites can be a bit of a double-edged sword. They can quickly become an absolute mess due to them being so customisable. All it takes is clicking a few settings, and you can have hours and hours of work to try and clean up. Sometimes it could take months to clean a website up, and if this is the case, then I would recommend a new site.
Starting your campaign with a 1-month web build and kicking off straight into your SEO strategy can often have your site performing well a lot sooner than if I was to go in and repair errors. The pros to this are that it will cost you less compared to spending three months trying to fix it all AND you end up with a brand spanking new design that’s specifically designed to convert users.
Converting customers is another area which can be a deciding factor on whether to rebuild a site. If you’re getting traffic to your site but visitors aren’t converting then this is usually a design thing. It could be that your design makes it difficult for a user to enquire or get in contact. It could just be outdated. In that case, I would recommend rebuilding to a lead generation design to encourage visitors to get in touch and promoting more sales.
If your site is on anything other than Wordpress, then I would recommend a new website. Unlike Wordpress, most other website building platforms (like Wix, Weebly, Squarespace) have limited functions in what you’re able to change for SEO. While some of the predesigned elements and drag and drop options can look great, unfortunately, competing with other businesses with optimised websites built on Wordpress, your Wix or Weebly site won’t stand a chance at making it to the top of the results. Pouring money into SEO and trying to compete with Wordpress sites with a Wix, Squarespace or Weebly site is just wasting your hard-earned dollars. Which is the last thing I want to happen!
